Health care is about people taking care of people and relies on a strong and healthy workforce. OHA and our member Workforce Task Force works to address emerging and continuing workforce issues and to develop, share and implement sustainable solutions for our member hospitals.
OHA’s Commitment
OHA is committed to supporting our member hospitals and health systems navigate workforce challenges by:
- Advocating for policies supportive of health care workforce development
- Educating policymakers on the need to expand clinical faculty and to provide student financial support to grow the workforce pipeline
- Communicating the availability of grants and funding sources to enhance clinical faculty capacity
- Raising public awareness of the workforce challenges and opportunities in hospitals
- Streamlining the ability of military and EMT personnel to transition to hospital careers
- Reimagining staffing models
- Sharing technological solutions

Ohio hospitals and health systems are creating new approaches to developing workforce talent within the communities they serve.
School to Work
The School to Work Program at TriHealth gives Cincinnati Public School students the opportunity to achieve real-life health care experience with many opportunities to succeed. This program allows students better exposure and a way to understand first-hand what careers in health care they may want to pursue in college. The program also prepares students over two years to transition into a part-time or full-time position at TriHealth.
Doubling Graduates
OhioHealth's partnership with Columbus State Community College is expected to double the schools health care graduates. Over the next 10 years, Columbus State will double the number of students in nursing, surgical technology, medical imaging, respiratory therapy and sterile processing – five health care fields where there is strong demand from both students and employers.
Representation Matters
Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth and University Hospitals are among 17 U.S. health systems to sign the “Impact Workforce Commitment,” to support the health systems' hiring and workforce development programs. These programs identify opportunities to increase hiring, training and promotion of diverse talent. The three Northeast Ohio health systems also partner with Cuyahoga Community College to support local residents studying in health care fields.
