Ohio Hospitals Are As Diverse As the Communities They Serve
OHA Membership
OHA’s member hospitals in 2023 include: 186 acute care hospitals; 22 long-term acute care facilities; and 40 psychiatric and rehabilitation specialty hospitals. Members include 33 critical access hospitals, 10 children’s hospitals and 49 teaching hospitals.
Patient Encounters
Patients had 36.4 million encounters at Ohio hospitals in 2022. Of those, 30 million were outpatient, 1.4 million inpatient and 5 million emergency room treated and released encounters.
Ownership
Most acute care hospitals in Ohio are nonprofit organizations. Only seven acute care hospitals are for-profit. Additionally, 24 Ohio hospitals are owned by local, county, state or federal governments.
Newest Ohioans
In 2022, more than 122,452 babies were born in Ohio hospitals.
Employment
Ohio hospitals employ 430,000 Ohioans, paid $20.7 billion in direct wages and collected $424 million in state income taxes for direct employees in the 12 months ending May 2022. Hospitals indirectly supported another 272,000 jobs in our state.
$91.7 Billion Economic Impact
Ohio hospitals are economic drivers in their communities. Five of Ohio’s top 10 employers are hospitals or health systems. Through direct, indirect and induced employment, Ohio hospitals in the 12 months ending May 2022 contributed $91.7 billion in statewide in economic impact.
